SNA’s Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2017 for young dancers and musicians

Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2017 were announced on 19th June. Yuva Puraskar, given to artistes below the age of 40 years, was introduced in the year 2006 with the objective of identifying and encouraging outstanding young talents in diverse fields of performing arts and giving them national recognition early in their life, so that they may work with greater commitment and dedication in their chosen fields.

Amidst a lot of excitement, disgruntled voices and hullabaloo on the social media, we have shaped up a fair bit of an image on our canvas about the young maestros who have been awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar by the Sangeet Natak Akademi.

Here is a quick glance at the artists, their journey and the reasons that went behind the conference of this prestigious award.

Parshwanath Upadhye| PC: Inni Singh

Change is always welcome and in the Sangeet Natak Akademi zone, when the recipient of the Ustad Bismillah Khan Puraskaar is somebody who has also ventured out of traditional genres and trodden the unknown turf, it is always a step forward for the entire community. Parshwanath Upadhye’s integration into this year’s list of awardees is one such achievement and hope for all of us. Of course, yes, the award has been given to him for his rootedness and propagation of Bharatnatyam, but Upadhye is well known for his creative ventures in this art form. He is a recipient of eight national awards and imparts training to many at the Upadhye School of Dance and Punyah Dance Company, both based in Bangalore.
