In a landmark move for Indian classical music education, Somaiya Vidyavihar University has appointed the renowned sitar maestro and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee, Niladri Kumar, as Dean of the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts at the Maya Somaiya School of Music and Performing Arts (MSSMPA). The school combines the ancient Gurukul system with modern technology, offering a comprehensive approach to teaching Indian music and performing arts.
Niladri Kumar, a fifth-generation sitar virtuoso, brings a distinctive fusion of classical and contemporary music to his new role. He is widely celebrated for creating the Zitar, an innovative electric sitar that merges traditional sounds with modern musical expressions. His groundbreaking work has resonated with audiences across genres, and he has garnered numerous prestigious awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, a Filmfare Award, and international acclaim for his contributions to Grammy-winning albums.
MSSMPA’s curriculum is designed to offer students a balanced blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, with a strong emphasis on individualized mentorship to hone each student’s artistic talents. Niladri Kumar’s forward-thinking approach to music embodies the vision of MSSMPA, where classical foundations meet contemporary creativity.
“We are excited to welcome Shri Niladri Kumar as the Dean of the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts at our Maya Somaiya School of Music & Performing Arts,” said Prof. V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor of Somaiya Vidyavihar University. “His dedication to preserving Indian classical music while pushing its boundaries into modern forms aligns perfectly with our mission of nurturing talent that can connect deeply with tradition and innovate for the future.”
Reflecting on his new role, Niladri Kumar shared his enthusiasm, stating, “I am looking forward to this association with Somaiya Vidyavihar University. As a musician and performer, I have always believed that there is enough art and music in the world for it to reach everyone. So, how many lives can we touch through performing arts? This question has inspired me to associate myself with the education community and also reach out to the younger generation. With our new education policy, I also look forward to not only taking a step to preserve but also propagate what we stand for – Viraasat with Vikas.”
With Niladri Kumar at the helm, MSSMPA is poised to bring innovative perspectives to the study and practice of Indian music, enriching the artistic journey for students and fostering a new generation of musicians grounded in tradition yet ready to explore the future of Indian classical music.
