Nritya Tarangini Utsav held in Mumbai

Saraswathy Kala Kendra presented the Nritya Tarangini Utsav featuring classical and folk dances of Asian countries at Prabhodhan Thackeray Sabhariha In Borivali, last week. it was interesting to watch as to how classical dances merged with folk dances, performed by performers from Nepal, Bangladesh and India.

Besides the dances performed by the students of the Kendra, the performers were Tapan Kumar Pattnaik (Chhau), Praful Singh Gehlot (Kathak), Ajay Shendge (Odissi), Shashi Ramesh (Bharatanatyam), Roshna Mahajan (Nepalese dance), Sachi Khare (Kathak), Dr Surabhi Lakshmi Sarada (Kuchipudi), Ramya V Jagdish (Mohiniattam), Ritika Banerjee (Odissi), Sanchaiyata Singha (Manipuri), Mufassal Hasan (Bengladeshi folk dance) and Suman Mondal (folk dance of Bengal). While most of the performers were trying to do their best, some of the performers like Chhau dancer Tapan Kumar, Kuchipudi dancer Surabhi from Hyderablad and Mufassal for folk dance created a lasting impression with their vibrancy and expresional quality.

Saraswathy Kala Kendra and Research Centre (Mira Road) is headed by accomplished Bhratanatyma and Kuchipudi exponent Subitha Murali, who has had the privelege of dancing in varied prestigious festivals both on the national and international level. Subitha also won the Mrs India Intellectual title in the contest organised by Perfect Woman magazine. This is the first time that the Kendra has taken the initiative to organise the festival of Asian arts.
