Veteran dancer Sonal Mansingh nominated to Upper House

Eminent Bharatanatyam & Odissi dancer and Guru Dr. Sonal Mansingh has been nominated today by the President to the Rajya Sabha.

Her nomination has been made by President Ram Nath Kovind on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to fill one of the vacancies caused due to the retirement of nominated members Sachin Tendulkar, Rekha, Anu Aga and K Parasaran.

The President of India can nominate 12 members to the Upper House “from amongst persons who have special knowledge or practical experience in respect of such matters as literature, science, art and social service” Under Article 80 of the Constitution.

Sonal Mansingh started her dance career in 1962, after her Arangetram in Mumbai and has been performing Odissi and Bharatanatyam.  She is the founder of Centre for Indian Classical Dances (CICD), New Delhi and a choreographer, teacher, orator and social activist.

She received Padma Bhushan (1992), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2003.

As a nominated member, Sonal Mansingh will have a six-year term.
