In a time when meditation music is often associated with soft ambient pads and slow drones, tabla artist and composer Tanay Rege offers a refreshing and unconventional approach with his new original instrumental track ‘AntarNaad – Exploring the Sounds Within’.
Unlike typical mindfulness compositions, AntarNaad places the tabla at the centre of the meditative experience, using rhythm — not silence — to create a trance-like state of inner focus. The title AntarNaad literally translates to “the sound within,” and the track is designed to be felt as much as it is heard.
Inspired by the scientific foundations of Indian classical music, Tanay builds the composition around the traditional tabla form Peshkar, where rhythmic phrases unfold gradually and cyclically, drawing the listener into a hypnotic flow. A recurring phrase (mukhda/aamad) subtly anchors the listener, creating anticipation and familiarity — much like a heartbeat.
Speaking about the concept, Tanay shares, “Tabla is usually seen as a fast or technical instrument. With AntarNaad, I wanted to explore whether rhythm itself can create calm, stillness, and a meditative impact.”
The track also features flute by Adwait Kashikar, adding a gentle melodic layer that deepens the meditative mood, while sound design by Omkar Agnihotri creates a spacious, immersive sonic environment.
Rooted in ancient rhythmic principles such as Chhand Shastra, AntarNaad presents a modern interpretation of Indian classical wisdom — showing how percussion can become a tool for mindfulness, healing, and inner awareness.
