Lavanya Nrityalaya and Nrityanvita, as part of the NCPA Dance Season. presented a unique thematic programme, Aprajita- stories of social reformers by accomplished classical dancers in Bharata Natyam and kathak dance styles on 2nd Fubruary at the IDC Auditorium, IIT Powai. The dancers featured were Dr Lata Surendra, Guru Ranjana Phadke and Guru Sheetal Kapole.

The first performer of the evening was Kalashree Dr Lata Surendra, who presented extracts from the book “Wings of Fire” by APJ Abdul Kalam and Arun Tiwari. Wings of Fire (1999) is the autobiography of Indian aesrospace scientist and former president of India, APJ Abdul Kalam. Kalam examines his early life, effort, hardship, fortitude, luck and chance that eventually led him to Indian space research, nuclear and missile progress. Lata and her talented disciples interpreted the varied facets of the book that shared as to how an ordinary poor boy from Rameshwaram (Tamil Nadu) could become so successful due to sheer determination and consistency that earned him the title “Missile Man of India”. The dance presentation were also interwoven with the insightful speeches of Kalam that left a lasting impression on the audience, along with the immaculate presentation by Lata and her talented disciples.

The second dancer of the evening was accomplished kathak danseuse and mentor, Guru Ranjana Phadke who said “From a very young age I have had a deep sense of reverence for Ahilyabai Holkar. I remain deeply humbled by her extraordinary wisdom and far sighted vision. Her immense contribution to society and public welfare, her sincere efforts to ensure dignity and respect for women continue to inspire generations. I carry a profound sense of gratitude for her life and legacy.”

The most touching scene was when the village folks were digging in order to construct a temple and what emerged underneath was water, hence Ahilya advised her folks that this place is ideal to dig a well and not temple as women have to walk miles in order to fetch some water. The dancers performed quite well in projecting the story of the social reformer Ahilyabai Holkar who completely changed the phase of women and her well being.

the last dancer of the evening, Guru Sheetal Kapole and her team presented Vispala, the story of the legendary warrior queen Vishpala from the Rigveda, whose courage, resilience and inner strength were against adversity and emotional trials, Through expressive movements, rhythmic footwork, powerful abhinaya, the performance celebrates her journey of determination and self belief. True strength lies in rising again stronger and wiser. It was quite encouraging and exhilarating to witness performances that can serve as a social corrective and an inspiration for better life and living.
