Madhavi Festival – New Dimensions to Margam, presented by the Madhavi Foundation for Creative Excellence and the KRI Foundation, will take place on Friday, April 21, 2023, at 7 p.m. The dance choreography consists of a collection of compositions that are deeply rooted in Bharatanatyam while providing a fresh perspective on the evolving Bharatanatyam vocabulary. Madhavi Gopalakrishnan, the mother of well-known dancer Rama Vaidyanathan, is honoured at the Madhavi festival. Ms. Gopalakrishnan loved dance and was an inspiration to her daughter.
Rama Vaidyanathan’s choreography New Dimensions to the Margam previews for the first time at the festival. She performs it with four of her disciples – Kavya Ganesh, Reshika Sivakumar, Shubhamani Chandrashekar, Vaishnavi Dhore. And a four-member musical ensemble. Nattuvangam and Kanjira by Ashwin Subramanian; Anugrah Lakshmanan on vocals; Sannidhi Vaidyanathan on mridangam; and Vishwesh Swaminadhan on violin.
The Margam is a collection of traditional dance compositions that build in imagery, energy, and emotion over time. It is the path that the Guru demonstrates to the disciple, and it is this path that the aspiring dancer spends his or her early years learning. After several years on this path, the dancer chooses her own path, making her own individualistic statements as well as artistic choices. This programme delves into the decisions Rama Vaidyanathan has made in order to give her own voice to traditional repertoire. As a result, the performance is titled “New Dimensions to Margam.”
Rama Vaidyanathan says, “Madhavi is the name of my mother, and she is the one who encouraged and assisted me in becoming the dancer I am today. This performance is dedicated to this wonderful lady who loved dance and was a pillar of strength for me throughout my dancing career.”
