Sufi Kalaam: An evening of Bulleh Shah & Amir Khusro’s songs

Sufi Kalaam is a mesmerizing collection of Sufi songs set to the poetry of Sufi saints Amir Khusro and Bulleh Shah and composed by Mohinderjit Singh in the most melodious, yet intricate manner.  It is being showcased on the 23rd of February, 2019 at ISKCON Auditorium, Juhu, Mumbai.

Sufi Kalaam is being presented by Satvikaa Academy of Fine Arts, an institution set up by Mohinderjit Sing with the intent to preserve, propagate, and create soulful, authentic, Indian music. Satvikaa, not only functions as a gurukul to teach aspiring singers, the true essence of music, but it also aims to impact the music ecosystem by popularising light music with heart and soul while being firmly rooted in Indian classical Raagas.

Mohinderjit Singh is accompanied by the renowned Guitarist and Rabab Player and singer, Chintoo Singh Wasir along with his Protégés and disciples who are well-known singers in the film industry. The main singers include Gaurav Bangia, Nobina Mirjankar, Amruta Natu, Dharna Pahwa, Shailesh Mavinkurve, Araanya Kaur and Ritendra Dirghangi. They are accompanied by Anurag Kaushal, Vishesh Goswami, Aanchal Kapoor and Vimmi Jayaram. Shri Gautam Chatterjee, Chairman MahaRera who is also a past student of Mohinderjit Singh will be the guest of honor.

Mohinderjit Singh’s compositions are a mystical, soul-stirring collection of songs based on Hindustani classical raags, and are a welcome change from the currently prevalent fusion Sufi music. Combined with Chintoo Singh’s vibrant guitar, each poetry weaves an intricate pattern of notes and evokes a sense of the whole, taking one beyond the physical realm.

Mohinderjit Singh’s illustrious musical journey spans over 50 years. He is known to discerning audiences and to Indian cinema enthusiasts as a singer, violinist and composer of high standing.  He has trained in both vocal and instrumental Hindustani music under the tutelage of Pandit Husn Lal, Bhagat Ram and Pandit Vinay Chandra Maudgalya. He has also studied western music under Pandit Ram Prasad and Josic Menezas. His vast repertoire is comprehensive and comprises of khayal, thumri, dadra, ghazal, geet, kaafi (Sufi) and bhajans. He has composed music for such renowned musicians and playback singers as Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, Suman Kalyanpur, Mahendra Kapoor, Jagjit Singh, Sulakshana Pandit, Shaan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Roop Kumar Rathod, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Savita Sathi, Jaspal Singh, Nina and Rajendra Mehta, Minoo Purshottam, Sandhya Rao, Dilraj Kaurs Anuradha Paudwal, and Parveen Sultana. He was honoured by the then prime minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who gave his composition Sadbhavana a national status. Mohinderjit is also renowned as a violin virtuoso.

His creativity is not restricted to just composing music. He is the inventor of Naad Yogini, an exquisite instrument which has the pathos of the violin, the resonance of the cello and the soothing sound of the sarangi and flute.

Chintoo Singh Wasir is a leading Sufi singer, composer and
guitarist. He has composed music for over 50 albums across record labels such as Times Music, Sa Re Ga Ma, CBS (now Sony), T-Series, Big Music, World Wide records, Crescendo etc. His albums have also been released internationally. He was awarded by Swar Alaap for Best Sufi Music in 2017 and for Best Sufi Composer Singer at Hungama 2018. He has also been invited to the expert Jury of Indian Idol.
 He has composed music for leading TV serials like Saturday Suspense (Zee TV), Kabhie Kabhie (Mahesh Bhatt, Zee TV), Antaral (Star TV), Jassoos and Ek Din Ek Jeevan (Star
TV)

He is recognised for his work in Padmaavat, Bollywood Diaries, Talvar, Haidar, Omkara, Bachna Ae Haseeno, Om Shanti Om, Golmaal Returns, Ek Tha Tiger and Torbaz. He has also composed music for Kaifi Azmi (Kaifiyat).

Really excited to be present in the evening Sufi Kalam being presented by the Saatvikaa Academy of fine arts.It will be an excellent opportunity to get immersed in the rich repertoire of Sufi music and songs composed by none other than Guru Mahinderjit Singhji and his disciples.Musical journey of the evening will be made more memorable in presence of Shri Chintoo Singji on Guitar and Rabab.
