Mumbai is set to witness a significant cultural revival as the Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Yaadgar Sabha returns with a commemorative evening dedicated to one of the greatest voices of Hindustani classical music. The musical event, scheduled for April 23, 2026, marks the relaunch of the Sabha’s activities after a prolonged hiatus, bringing renewed focus to the legacy of the legendary maestro.

Founded in 1971, the Trust was established to preserve and promote the memory of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, the towering figure of the Patiala gharana. Over the years, however, the Sabha had remained inactive due to various constraints. With the collaboration of Grace Foundation, the Trust is now poised to reintroduce its musical offerings to audiences in Mumbai.

A senior office bearer from the Trust expressed optimism about this renewed chapter, noting that the association with Grace Foundation would help reignite the Sabha’s cultural mission. The upcoming concert is being positioned not merely as a performance but as an effort to reconnect contemporary audiences with a rich musical lineage.

The event will take place at the P.L. Deshpande Mini Theatre, Ravindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi, and will feature a curated presentation of Hindustani classical music. The evening will include vocal recitals by Shruti Bujarbaruah and Ramakant Gaikwad, both known for their grounding in traditional styles. They will be supported by an accomplished ensemble comprising Rohit Deo and Yashwant Vaishnav on tabla, Sudhanshu Gharpure and Siddartha Mesta on harmonium, and Farooque Latif Khan on sarangi.

Speaking about the initiative, Shashi Vyas, founder of Grace Foundation, emphasised the importance of preserving and celebrating classical traditions. He noted that the presentation aims to honour a musical legacy that continues to inspire generations and foster a deeper appreciation for classical arts.

Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, born in 1902 in Kasur (now in Pakistan), is widely regarded as the defining exponent of the Patiala gharana. Known for his extraordinary vocal range, intricate ornamentation, and emotive renditions, he left an indelible mark on Indian classical music. His mastery over khayal and thumri, combined with a distinctive style of taan, made him a revered figure across audiences and generations. Even decades after his passing in 1968, his recordings continue to be studied and admired by musicians and connoisseurs alike.

The organisers have chosen to keep the event free and open to all, underlining a commitment to making classical music accessible beyond conventional barriers. However, with limited seating available, attendees are advised to arrive early.

The relaunch of the Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Yaadgar Sabha through this concert signals not only a tribute to a legendary artist but also a renewed effort to sustain and celebrate India’s classical music heritage in contemporary times.

The event is scheduled on 23rd April, 6 PM at P.L. Deshpande Mini Theatre, Ravindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi. Entry is Free.
